It’s lard!
A rather unusual relic from World War II washed at St Cyrus Nature Reserve, near Montrose, Aberdeenshire. Four large, oddly-shaped pieces of lard have washed ashore. They have escaped from the wreck of a merchant vessel that was bombed in WW II, it is believed.
Scottish Natural Heritage said the lard was still a brilliant white and smelled “good enough to have a fry up with.” I can’t say I fancy it after 70 years.
Angus McHardy, a retired fisherman living nearby , remembered similar events in the in early 1940s.
“Some barrels were complete and others were just lumps. People collected it. My grandma boiled it up to get the sand out. It was great because we couldn’t get fat during the war.”

The lard was once kept in wooden barrels, which have long since rotted away.
